A gordo cigar is a thick cigar with a ring gauge of 60 or more. Gordo means "fat" in Spanish, and a 60 ring is almost an inch across. All that tobacco produces big, cool, voluminous smoke, and in a full-length gordo, a long, slow session.

Gordos come two ways here: full-size cigars around 6 x 60 that run about 85 minutes, a Weekend Warrior on the Burn Clock, and short, thick Nub gordos you can finish in under an hour. Compare every shape on Cigars by Size & Shape.

Gordo Cigar FAQ

What is a gordo cigar?

A gordo is any cigar with a ring gauge of 60 or higher. The most common size is 6 x 60, but they come shorter and longer, and some reach a 70 ring. Ring gauge is measured in 64ths of an inch, so a 60 ring is about 15/16 of an inch across. Our Anatomy of a Cigar guide explains the parts and proportions of a cigar.

Is a bigger ring gauge cigar stronger?

Not necessarily. Strength comes from the tobacco blend, not the size. A thicker cigar puts out more smoke and burns cooler, and the filler plays a bigger role than the wrapper. A mild blend in a gordo is still a mild cigar. To understand how strength and body really work, see Strength, Body & Flavor.

How do you light a gordo cigar?

Use a torch lighter with two or more flames, and toast the whole foot, rotating as you go, until it glows evenly from edge to edge. A wide foot is easy to light unevenly, and a careful start prevents tunneling later. Find the right torch lighter in our accessories, and step-by-step lighting tips in How to Smoke a Cigar.
