Aging Room cigars collection at Cigar Nation

Rafael Nodal came to the United States from Cuba in 1980 as a teenage refugee on the Mariel boatlift. He didn't set out to make cigars, he trained as a pianist and violinist first, then built a career in healthcare, and only came to tobacco later almost by accident.

His first release, Aging Room Small Batch M356, came out in 2011 in partnership with cigarmaker Jose “Jochy” Blanco in the Dominican Republic, and it landed on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 that same year. Nodal renamed his company Boutique Blends in 2012 to reflect what the brand had become: small production runs built around long-rested tobacco rather than volume.

The Quattro Nicaragua Maestro, made in partnership with A.J. Fernandez, became Cigar Aficionado's No. 1 Cigar of the Year in 2019, a 96-point Nicaraguan puro. Nodal's musical background still shows up in how he names things, the Quattro Nicaragua Sonata line is a direct nod to Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven.
