Kristoff Cigars was founded in 2004 by Glen Case, a Chicago cigar broker who left the business side of the industry to build his own brand, named after his son Christopher. Case partnered with a Dominican Republic factory (now Tabacalera Von Eicken, then Charles Fairmorn) to start production.

Glen Case spent nearly two decades in corporate finance at HSBC in Chicago before what he calls a mid-life crisis led him to cigars instead. In 2004, he left banking behind and started blending his own cigars, naming the brand Kristoff after his son, Christopher, rather than after himself.

His early mentor was Rolando Villamil, who oversaw the Charles Fairmorn factory in the Dominican Republic, now known as Tabacalera Von Eicken, where every Kristoff cigar has been produced since. Case built the brand's look around the same distinctive details from the start: a pigtail cap, an uncut foot, and cigars displayed loose in tobacco leaves inside rough-sawn cedar boxes rather than tissue paper.

The Corojo Limitada Torpedo put Kristoff on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 list in 2012, and the brand has kept expanding its wrapper lineup ever since, Criollo, Connecticut, San Andres, Sumatra, and Cameroon versions all carry the same rustic presentation Case started with in his basement.
